as an aspiring middle-grade author. this is a little concerning, I have been playing with the idea of self-publishing over traditional publishing (will have to take this into account when closer to my decision)

I know it’s not a priority, and it might not work for your ideas for the book, but just a thought: You could turn When The Sea Came for Us into a YA romantasy instead and have it non-spicy. That might help it be less intimidation and there are plenty of people who don’t like spicy books (including myself, lol).

Congrats on the move! I hope it goes well for you, Brian, and your animals. Yes! DNFing is so therapeutic. The only time I try to push through is when I want to change formats. I have been in a big romance kick lately because I just want a fun read. It doesn't have to be the best, but something to entertain me.

Suns out, guns out! Critical Role isn't just like reading, it's like reading a crazy odyssey. I think that's why my current titles read is at 34? It also includes a list of graphic novels, my brain has just not been up for long reading stints right now, and audiobooks. I'm obsessed with this mermaid book you're working on, it speaks to my teenage self who was consumed by mermaids and dolphins.

For me The key to reading more has been to read the books I’m most interesting and make it a hugely indulgent pleasure by eating or drinking things mentioned in the book, and when I’m with others I always think oh I can’t wait to be reading. So I think the same principle could be applied to writing if you lack motivation. Why not work on the things you’re most interested in or find a way to think about it or make it your most indulgent pleasure. …Look at this bag of Kale, okay I’m going to go because I’m being goofy LOL love it

I don't understand why you would spend money on a QR code. Just use a free QR code generator to make one that links to your website (or link tree, or whatever). Most QR codes are just website URLs and that's really all you need.

I would never see a YA as Romantasy, because that term means explicit content in my mind. I would say Romantasy indicates open door intimacy scenes at least and all the way up to erotica (like smutty beach reads, bodice rippers, etc), so not something I would ever expect to find in a YA book since that age range is high school age or 15 to 18. I could be wrong about that range and when NA begins, but I agree that good high fantasy books are being called (or taking advantage of the expectations of) Romantasy and not actually fitting into the sub-genre. Romantasy is fantasy romance with a certain reputation (thanks TikTok), but a fantasy with a romance subplot is not the same.

As a bookseller, the Middle Grade dip comes down to the consumers and the overall struggle in reading. Customers genuinely will not buy middle grade. The shopping jumps from chapter books and easy readers straight to YA and adult. Parents and especially grandparents believe the children in their lives are ready for teen and adult level reading as soon as they reach double digits. I cannot tell you how many times a day I hear “well they are 10, but they read at a college level” and they will not even entertain the MG section. And when they do buy MG, it is very hard to get them to take recommendations. They only want to buy what they know and it’s very difficult to get them to branch out. We have tried so many things to highlight middle grade, but the average consumer is almost writing off the entire category. I don’t know why that is, but it’s very noticeable when working with customers day to day.

YAY I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I READ THE TITLE<3 I've been following your ups and downs with publishing, and it sucks when things out of our control impact our work so much. But I'm so glad you're coming back with another book! I was just wondering because I'm so much into publishing (in Norway and Scandinavia), how do you separate lower and upper middle grade? The way we label as middle grade is 9-12, and then our "YA" is 13-18. So where our books are suffering is lower YA. No one wants to write 13-15 year olds, bc we're afraid teenagers won't read down in age. And very few people want to write Norwegian YA at all, bc Norwegian teens are reading English YA. So that's a whole ordeal. And I'm making lower YA my whole career lol. But yeah, is upper middle grade like 13+ in English speaking publishing? Because English YA is more "adult"? Sorry to bomb you with questions, but I'm just so curious, and I watch your quarterly publishing videos religiously even though they are quite different from my publishing world. ANYWAY congrats on selling another book, it sounds really cool🙌
